June 21: Bring Your Instrument to Work Day!

Welcome to Sousapalooza! If you play a band instrument or have EVER played a band instrument, we want YOU to join us in Daley Plaza at noon when Richard Fischer, Director of Bands at Concordia University-Chicago, leads us through some of the most beloved Sousa marches.

Details:

  • Where: Daley Plaza
  • When: 12-12:30pm during Make Music Chicago on June 21st
  • Why: To re-live those glorious band days!
  • What: Sousa marches! We’re planning to play the Washington Post March, Semper Fidelis, and of course, Stars and Stripes Forever. We will also play the Star-Spangled Banner (in A-flat major).

Do I need to sign up?

  • We encourage you to register by clicking here. It would be helpful to us to get an idea of how many we might expect to come. However, if you forget to sign up, we won’t stop you from coming!

What do I need to bring?

  • Your instrument!
  • A stand (if you need one)
  • Music (unless you think you’ll be able to find someone else with a part you can read off of)

Where can I get the part for my instrument (for the day of the event, and maybe to practice a little beforehand)?

All of the parts are available online (don’t worry, it’s all public domain). Click on the titles below to download your part for that piece.

The Star-Spangled Banner may be a little confusing because it is scored for orchestra. If you play a concert key instrument (flute, oboe, bassoon, trombone, tuba), pick an appropriate string part to play. If you play a B-flat transposing instrument (B-flat clarinet, trumpet/cornet, tenor saxophone) choose either Bb1 or Bb2. Horns in F and alto sax have their own parts. If you have any questions, please send us an email, and we can clear up any confusion.

Questions?

  • E-mail sousapalooza AT makemusicchicago.com
  • Call 773-350-0MMC

We hope to make this the loudest event that Daley Plaza has ever seen (and heard!), so if you know friends or colleagues who play or have played a band instrument, please encourage them to dust off their instruments and join us in Daley Plaza!
